Report: Drawing Salon with Guest Artist, Martin Bisi

On July 23rd, Artuta held its first hybrid Drawing Salon Guest Artist Series featuring renowned music producer and artist, Martin Bisi. Held at Artuta headquarters, Tappeto Volante Gallery in Brooklyn. We had a great turn out both online and in person for the event.

As participants settled in, an introduction of Bisi and his accolades were shared as “An American guitarist and producer” and “Bisi has probably produced all your favorite albums.” Bisi shared that he once plastered the walls in his childhood room with abstract shapes as a form of rebellion from the classical music his mother once pushed him towards. The drawing prompt, which was based on the organic doodles Bisi made, was to “draw something that said or reflected something inside of you.”

With the drawing prompt shared, Brian Eno’s 1982 album Ambient 4: On Land, was played and the drawing began. As Bisi began to make lines using colorful markers, he talked about how drawing, colors, and shapes said something about music, that, although music may seem in the background, it does affect what you do. Being inspired by music to improvise and create new shapes, Bisi said, “Take advantage of the power of randomness.” As he continued his drawing, Artuta instructor Joan Hacker asked Bisi questions about how art and music relate and how they influenced one another.

As the Drawing Salon came to an end, participants shared their images in the Artuta dropbox for everyone to see. Mini critiques were had for several drawings, with participants, instructors, and Bisi sharing their initial reactions and thoughts. In the span of 45 minutes several amazing artworks were created and shared both online and in person! Overall, our first inaugural hybrid class and Guest Artist Drawing Salon was a success!

I joined the hybrid Drawing Salon via my laptop. It was exciting to see so many participants fill Tappeto Volante and fun to see a bird’s eye view of Bisi’s drawing. I enjoyed the very different and organic experience of making art with others. I found the drawing salon to be very refreshing and open, I found that it is also a good place to experiment and brainstorm with techniques or ideas I have been thinking about but may too afraid to try.
